Education in Brighton
The
University of Sussex established in 1961 is a campus university about 4 miles from the city centre. It has a student population of 10,563. The
University of Brighton, the former Brighton Polytechnic, has a student population of 20,017.
In 2003, the universities of Sussex and Brighton formed a medical school, the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. This was one of four new medical schools to be created as part of a government programme to increase the number of qualified NHS doctors.
There are also a number of well known private schools, including Brighton College and Roedean School.
